As a skier you must be able to decelerate your body against gravity, while maintaining balance and control, often at a high velocity. Furthermore, rapidly adapt to variations in terrain, and must be able to function in all planes of movement. This requires strength, flexibility, power and endurance throughout the entire kinetic chain.
The demands that skiing places on your body are unique, and not seen in other sports. It is therefore imperative that you specifically train for the demands of skiing itself. Following a specially designed routine that replicates and strengthens the movements of skiing will increase your performance, enjoyment levels and significantly reduce the chances of injury.
We help you to develop the following qualities that are necessary in order to ski:
Skiing requires some muscle groups to work steadily all day long to maintainyour position on your skies. For example your soles (deep calf muscles) to maintain your ankle flexion, your adducters (inner thigh muscles) to stop your skies sliding apart and your transverse abdominals and multifidis, to maintain your core and stop you folding at the waist, especially at the bumps.
Good flexibility will help you have a good stance on your skies and prevent injury. Essential power and strength training will tighten your muscles if not counteracted by a well-structured stretching prescription
Skiing places great power demands on many muscle groups, especially your quadriceps and gluteus muscles. They need to be able to generate large amounts of force in short bursts.
A form of training which utilises bounding and jumping to take a muscle from shortened to lengthened very rapidly. It is an excellent way to mimic the rapid demands of skiing whilst improving explosive power.
Skiing requires constant fine adjustments in order for you to adapt to the constantly changing terrain, snow and speed. Your joints and soft tissue will be constantly providing your brain with information about your body position, and this is called proprioception. Excellent proprioception means that you will be faster to respond to the changing conditions and demands of skiing.
So if you're heading off skiing this winter, whether with friends or family, why not enjoy the thrill to full capacity.
